early good reviews from commuters for the country's first air-conditioned local, run between Churchgate and Virar, has prompted railway officials to pursue plans for getting more such rakes aggressively. The train currently makes 12 daily trips, though there are no services on the weekend.
Railway officials had last year discussed a number of proposals with Goyal during his visits to Mumbai. In November, he asked them to prepare a comprehensive plan covering all the points.
The resulting Rs 44,000-crore plan includes proposals for installing a new signalling system that will help improve frequency of trains; buying more rakes; setting up a maintenance facility; station improvements; construction of fifth and sixth line between Borivali and Virar; extension of Harbour Line till Borivali; third and fourth line between Kalyan and Badlapur; fourth line between Kalyan and Asangaon; new suburban corridors between CST and Panvel, and Panvel and Virar.
"The railway minister wants the suburban network to keep pace with new transit projects such as the metro. The new comprehensive plan will be discussed with him during his scheduled visit to the city this week," a senior rail official said. "Goyal and chief minister Devendra Fadnavis will take a call on how things can move forward."
