Come new year, railways is all set to roll out Uday Express, its ambitious new long distance double decker train.
The trains will run on three routes-Coimbatore-Bengaluru; Bandra-Jamnagar and Visakhapatnam-Vijaywada.
Uday Express or the Utkrisht Double-Decker Air- conditioned Yatri Express was announced in the Railway Budget 2016-2017 and is specially aimed at catering to business travellers.
The first trial run of the train was
conducted on August 10 with just three coaches, and the speed was then limited to just 80km per hour. The second took place on December 5 on the Coimbatore-Bangalore route at a speed of 100 kmph from covering a distance of around 235km.
Uday will join nine other double decker trains in the railways' fleet.
The trains are a improved variant of the normal AC double decker chair car coaches with vinyl wrapping on exterior coaches, LCD type passenger information system on each deck, dining space on middle deck area with provision of automatic food vending machine and large LCD screen for infotainment on every third coach.
The train will have two bathrooms with bio-toilets.
"These trains will have 40 per cent additional passenger capacity and will be plying on busy routes. So, it's a great addition to our fleet," an official said.
The first Uday Express is likely to be first operational on the Coimbatore-Bangalore route.
Officials said that it will depart at 5:40 am from Coimbatore to reach Bengaluru at 12:40 pm, taking a total time of seven hours.
On the other hand, for the return journey the Bengaluru- Coimbatore Uday Express will depart at 2:15 pm from Bengaluru to reach Coimbatore at 9:00 pm, taking a total time of 6 hours and 45 minutes.

Apologies for delayed uploads. I travelled back to MAS by 12028 Namma Shatabdi on December 9,2017. Surprisingly very few coaches had insurance ads.
Pics1to5:The link for my Shatabdi was 30410(typical P4 type honker. Horns were heard clearly in my coach.). My P7 was escorted by another P7 30364. Both of them arrived grandly onto the PF,coupled with the rake with a thud. Then, 30364 honked like a steam engine and left the PF. Later it got coupled with the MKM passenger on the adjacent PF.

Additional spottings:
1.MYS bound Kaveri departed at 5:40 PM from SBC. Dont know why it was delayed.
2.SBC Mail from MAS arrived at 5:40 PM.
3.DD with HOG WAP7 and the best part was that it got its DD EOG back.
4.Spotted,SR's first 3 phase EMU rake at Avadi EMU car shed.
5.Finally, we arrived at PF.No.6 at MAS. We were following SBC MAS Mail(rescheduled from SBC) throughout. It had arrived about 35 mins before the Shatabdi on PF.No.9. The link was RPM WAP7 30416.

Indian Railways is working out a plan to terminate the train services that run much below their passenger capacity. The move is aimed at cutting down on revenue losses due to heavy operational costs of these trains.
The Railway Board is in the process of finalising the criteria to decide on the trains that would either be terminated or merged with other trains on the same route. A decision in this regards is likely by February 2018.
According to Railway sources, if the bar is fixed at passenger occupancy below 50 per cent,
then many trains will have to be terminated. However, the Railways will keep in mind that there are other trains on the route. “It has been observed that several trains run below normal passenger capacity on daily basis. This causes huge revenue loss and puts extra pressure on the already choked railway network. Rationalising these trains is also likely to impact the punctuality of other trains on same routes,” said a Railway Ministry official.
The official said if there are more trains on same routes, then either the routes would have to be changed or merging of two trains could be done to cater to passengers.
Punctuality of trains is also a major area of concern for the Railways. Minister of Railways Piyush Goyal has issued directions to improve the punctuality of premium trains like Rajdhani, Shatabdi and Duronto. Railways face revenue loss of over Rs.30,000 crore annually on account of subsidy and concessions. Officials said if the idea is to run the Railways like a commercial organisation, hard decisions were the need of the hour. Several sections such as Delhi-Howrah and Delhi-Mumbai run below their capacity, and the purpose is to weed out trains that don’t see high passenger occupancy, sources said.
The country’s largest public transporter is also reviewing the status of 171 projects, mostly new lines, worth over Rs.1.5 lakh crore as they have not taken off in over a decade. Majority of these projects were announced by former rail ministers Lalu Prasad and Mamata Banerjee in their rail budgets.
Goyal, during a review of pending projects, directed the Railway Board to decide the fate of these projects for they have become a financial burden on cash strapped railways. In total, 491 projects – new line, gauge conversion and doubling of tracks – worth Rs.4 lakh crore are pending.

Very good decision, but will take time to implement:
Under SWR - I reallly want these trains to be replaced :
* UBL LTT weekly with UBL NZM SF Express (Via GDG, BJP MMR)
* The idle of UBL BSB can be used for UBL - BBS Express
YPR SVDK ( I believe the same can be cancelled and a new MYS - SBC - UBL - BRC - KOTA - NZM - SVDK) can be run.
* UBL SUR ICE can be cancelled and UBL SUR Pass can serve the purpose.
* YPR PVR Special needs to either change its timings or be cancelled and a new YPR BAY HPT (Via JRU) weekly Express can run
* Instead of MYS SBC UBL Viswamanava , they can easily make this train as BGM - MYS SF ICE (After scrapping BGM UBL Fast pass) (Via UBL, SBC) It will surely hit the tracks if extended to BGM.

Yet another master stroke of new RM. Instead of just crying about low investments, and asking for more resources, it would be most prudent to properly utilize the existing resources. IR with revenue touching almost Rs 2 lac crores per annum can do wonders if it can utilise its funds very well. Major resources/areas that need utmost care are:
(1) TRAINS- run trains with max. permissible rake length as to maximise revenue as well as the no. of passengers carried. Ratonalisation of trains with poor occupancy and revenues through augmentation & merger of trains.
PROJECTS-Critical analysis of the ongoing projects and freeze the loss making projects which were sanctioned for political benefits.
(3) MANPOWER-Proper use of Manpower through multi tasking, training and organisational restructuring.
(4) UPGRADATION-More investments are necessary for technological up-gradation to improve capacity and profitability. Extrensive use of IT & IT enabled applications to speed up decision making and improve the services.
(5) SAFETY- Last but not the least, timely maintenance & replacement of assets like tracks, Trains, Signals, Buildings, Bridges etc
